Phonathon is fun and hard work and fulfilling and fruitful. In fact, our students usually raise $80,000 or more each year and Verizon furnishes cell phones and long distance. Thank you Verizon and thank you students.
Each year, in the middle of the second semester, about 120 students volunteer their time away from studying and class and call alumni at least three spring nights to ask for donations to scholarships. Their volunteer hours top 900 every year, and here is what they do:
- Ask restaurants and caterers to feed them each calling night.
- Find prizes to be given out in a raffle drawing throughout the three hours of calling.
- Solicit larger prizes to be awarded to students who garner the most number of pledges, the largest amount of pledge dollars and the largest pledge.
- Call, call, and call.
The Dean gives first and second place cash prizes to the class that brings in the most in pledges. These funds are deposited in their class treasury for four years. When they graduate they leave the balance as the seed for their class scholarship or fund.
We are proud of and grateful for their giving spirit and they are proud they can help provide scholarships to future students.
